Ready to beat the winter blues...

We’ve officially reached that time of year where winter starts to get a little, well, old. Hints of spring are still weeks away for much of the U.S. Luckily, that’s where a Hawaiian vacation comes to the rescue. With five main islands to explore, there’s a lot to consider when planning your trip. Check out our overview of what to expect from the different islands, as well as a crash course in COVID protocol so you can make the most of your visit.

Our Essential Guide to the Hawaiian Islands

KAUAI

Known as the "Garden Island," Kauai is a must-visit for the no-muss, no-fuss kind of traveler. The oldest member of the Hawaiian Islands, it appeals to visitors with its seductive natural landscapes rather than the obvious tourist traps. Come with an adventurous spirit, and of course, a good pair of hiking boots. Whether you hike through Koke’e State Park’s Waimea Canyon or take in views of the Napali Cliffs from Ke’e Beach, this island is for nature lovers at heart.

MAUI

There's much more to this island than simply a honeymoon destination. For many, Maui is the perfect sweet spot when it comes to accessibility and the range of activities available to visitors. Impressive wildlife and vibrant culture are just the tip of the iceberg on this island. Sandwiched between the Big Island and the tiny Molokai, Maui itself is divided into five distinct regions. Many vacationers tend to congregate in the south (home to the iconic Wailea Beach) or the west. However, the other regions are not to be missed. Drive along the Road to Hana to explore the island's eastern coastline or explore Haleakala, the world's largest dormant volcano.

Four Seasons Lanai

Four Seasons Lanai

LANAI

Easily the most exclusive of the Hawaiian Islands, Lanai is the perfect destination for those looking to lounge in luxury and isolation. Polihua and Shipwreck Beaches are secluded stretches of sand perfect for a casual afternoon on the northern coast. While it’s tempting to spend your entire time on Lanai within the comfort of your posh accommodations, don’t miss sneaking in a round on the green of the Manele Golf Course or trying your hand at deep-sea fishing.

THE BIG ISLAND

Often passed over for its smaller counterparts, the largest Hawaiian island is not to be missed, especially by first-time visitors. Geographically diverse, this island boasts both black sand beaches and snow-topped peaks—and just about everything in between. Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park gives visitors a unique glimpse into the process of how the islands were created, while the Waipio Valley’s verdant expanse can be explored on horseback.

left: Honolulu | right: Iolani Palace

This island might blend spectacular scenery and utmost luxury more than its neighbors. Honolulu's cosmopolitan city is home to must-visit sites like the Iolani Palace and the Pearl Harbor National Memorial. Put the high-rises of Waikiki in your rearview mirror and head to the island's North Shore. This is where you'll catch some of the Hawaiian Islands' best surfing, as well as incredible hiking. For instance, La'ie Ridge Trail leads visitors to a 15-foot waterfall.

Covid Crash Course: Since October, it’s possible for visitors entering the Hawaiian Islands to bypass a mandatory quarantine by providing a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours of arrival and registering with the Safe Travels Hawai’i program. However, there are some inter-county travel quarantine requirements for those traveling to and between Kauai, Maui, and the Big Island. Since each island manages their own regulations, we can provide the most current information for prospective island hoppers.

Whatever island (or islands) you decide to visit, We are here to help you navigate everything from COVID guidelines to the best beach to take surfing lessons. Contact Far and Away to begin planning!

How We Stay Educated During Uncertain Times

Since around this time in 2020, Far and Away has have made it our mission to stay updated on the latest trends, regulations, and changes brought on by the coronavirus pandemic. As situations worldwide develop month to month and even day to day, we recognize the importance of staying educated to keep you safe when you decide to leave home.

From attending virtual seminars and discussions with our colleagues to utilizing social media, we consistently strive to answer any question you have concerning travel in 2021 and beyond. This past year has been a learning curve for the industry, but we take pride in how we have managed the situation. Keeping that spirit of travel alive is mostly thanks to clients like you. Your enthusiasm to explore the world, patience and feedback on the types of experiences you’re looking for has been paramount.

In addition to the efforts already mentioned, press releases from the CDC have been one of the more reliable indicators to predict just how travel preferences will change on an immediate basis. For example, on January 12th, the CDC released a statement announcing that a negative COVID test taken within 72 hours will be required for all passengers entering the United States, regardless of destination, and went into effect on January 26th.

While this is not an unfamiliar requirement to enter other countries for those who have been, or plan to, travel internationally, this development will require additional planning when considering travel outside the United States. As a result of this announcement, we expect to see clients' further consideration in choosing destinations that have the appropriate testing facilities and an uptick in domestic travel to avoid this new regulation altogether.

It’s navigating situations like these where your travel advisor is your greatest ally. Whether you’re planning a trip for this month or years down the lane, rest assured we have the know-how to keep your next vacation low-stress and safe.

Inspirational Italy

Back in November, Travel + Leisure announced Italy as their 2021 Destination of the Year. It’s not hard to see why. Italy is a cultural hub—from its mind-blowing regional cuisine to its deep historical roots. While the country’s borders currently remain closed, we are here to give you some ideas of where along "the boot" to head once restrictions are lifted.

Two regions that have jumped to the top of our must-visit list are slightly unfamiliar to the average American tourist—Puglia and Umbria.  Comprising the "heel" of Italian "boot," Puglia is often missed by visitors, along with the neighboring region of Calabria. It’s a wonder as to why, since this tiny corner of the country is jam-packed with fascinating architecture and the origin spot for many of the typical Italian foods recognized by foreigners.  Not to miss are the trulli di Alberobello. Easily one of the most architecturally distinct villages in all of Italy, the white-washed cottages with conical roofs look like a setting straight out of a fairytale.

Alberobello.jpg

It would be easy to call the region of Umbria the heart of Italy. Situated nearly equidistant between Naples to the south and Bologna to the north, it’s also completely landlocked. As a result, the cuisine here is earthy and hearty—think truffles, sharply flavored Pecorino cheese, porchetta and dishes with bases of grains and beans. A visit to this region, which may just be Italy’s best kept secret, wouldn’t be complete without a day or two spent in the capital of Perugia. The city boasts a well-preserved historic town center with detailed stone architecture and winding streets. Not to miss is the gallery of medieval and renaissance art at the Galleria Nazionale dell’Umbria and the Piazza IV Novembre and its beautiful Maggiore Fountain.

Assisi.jpg

Wandering the streets of Assisi is practically mandatory. The birthplace of the well-known Saint Francis (or San Francesco to the Italians), his namesake basilica, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a must-visit. Situated on the western slope of Mount Subasio, the sunsets in Assisi are notably spectacular to witness.

This year, it only seems right that a familiar favorite is at the top of our travel wish list.

A dose of that Italian spirit, after all, is good for the soul.

Navigating the New Year

We hope that you were able to ring in the new year safely and joyfully! While we may have left 2020 behind, much of its uncertainty and problems still remain. That’s why even in 2021, travel advisors are still going to be your best defense against the uncertainty of trip planning in the new year and beyond.

Travel technology—from online booking to virtual tours of properties and attractions—has made planning a vacation infinitely more accessible to the average person. There’s no argument there. However, it’s also made the process infinitely more complex, and in a day and age where travel is as complex as it’s ever been, just starting the process can seem overwhelming. That’s why it’s essential to have an experienced travel advisor in your corner.

Over the course of 2020, We have made it a prerogative to become an expert on this new, and ever-changing, travel landscape. Planning far in advance, knowing what attractions are open and available to tourists, keeping up with what’s needed to enter a country, obtaining travel or medical insurance, and even knowing who to call if you or someone in your party gets sick—these are just some of the areas where we can not only answer your questions, but make the overall process of crafting your next adventure as seamless as possible.   When you are ready to travel again we will be here, until then we look forward to continuing to inspire you!
